PGA Tour Rookie Tweets "#hangitupmike" After Mike Weir Withdraws from RBC Heritage

Mike Weir won the Masters in 2003 in a playoff against Len Mattice. Weir has eight PGA Tour wins, his last was in 2007 at the Fry’s Electronics Open, but since 2010, Weir’s game has been a complete disaster. After an opening round 78 at the RBC Heritage this week, Weir withdrew from the event and didn’t cite a reason. This made 33-year-old South African PGA Tour rookie Dawie van der Walt pretty angry. Van der Walt took to Twitter to voice his frustration that a man who hasn’t made a cut in his last 24 starts, earned an entry into an event and then withdrew when someone else could have actually used his spot.

"“Gota (sic) love a guy who gets an invite into a Tour event and then WD after the first round,” van der Walt wrote, employing the hashtag, “#hangitupmike.”"

When asked to explain his Tweet, Van der Walt said, “I should not have said that its [sic] nothing against him it’s just when you [sic] hurt and WD and other [sic] could have played.”

Van der Walt isn’t wrong in his complaint; he’s made seven cuts in 13 starts this season and isn’t in the field this week. If you’re hurt, and there’s a chance that you won’t be able to finish the tournament, why enter the event and take someone else’s possible spot? Especially when you haven’t played well enough to claim that you may break through and actually make a cut.

Weir’s stats since 2010 paint a dismal picture.

2010 – 19 events – 11 cuts made – 1 top 10 finish
2011 – 15 events – 2 cuts made – 2 withdrawals
2012 – 14 events – zero cuts made
2013 – 22 events – 9 cuts made – 1 withdrawal

But what are even worse are Weir’s stats since he somehow managed to finish second at the Byron Nelson Championship in 2014.

Mike Weir is not playing good golf, hell, he’s not even playing golf because he hasn’t played a full tournament since 2014 and hasn’t broken par in any of the rounds he’s played this season. Weir has been able to continue playing thanks to a major medical extension, but as Van der Walt said, it’s time for Weir to put his clubs away.
