Andrew Shaw has been suspended one game and fined $5,000 by the NHL for making a homophobic slur and an “inappropriate gesture” towards on-ice officials. The incidents took place Tuesday night during the third period of the Chicago Blackhawks’ 4-3 loss to the St. Louis Blues.

A statement from NHL senior executive vice president of hockey operations Colin Campbell addressed the incident:

"“While Mr. Shaw was apologetic and remorseful for both the offensive comments and the inappropriate gesture directed at the on-ice officials, he must be held accountable for his actions. The emotion of the moment cannot and will not be a mitigating factor for the conduct that is expected of an NHL player.”"

Shaw met with the media and apologized for his actions on Wednesday:

Video of the entire incident is below, and quite frankly, Shaw had nothing to complain about. He was whistled for an obvious penalty.

The Blackhawks trail the Blues 3-1 in the series and desperately need Shaw on the ice, but he will miss a critical Game 5 in St. Louis on Thursday.
