UMass Can Drop Football For All The Faculty Care

The Faculty Senate at the University of Massachusetts on Wednesday sent a letter to the big wigs saying that pretty much the school needed to move down to a lower division of football or just dump the program altogether for all they cared.

Mass Live has the details.

"On Thursday, the Faculty Senate will meet in Herter Hall on campus for its second-to-last session of the spring semester. Included on the revised agenda for the meeting is a motion to “urge Chancellor Subbaswamy, President Meehan, and the Board of Trustees of the University to end Division I football (Football Bowl Subdivision) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and either move to a different division or discontinue NCAA football altogether.” "

UMass has only been an Football Bowl Subdivision team for four years, so this isn’t exactly Miami. More importantly, UMass no longer has a conference to play in, no longer has the athletic director that guided the step to FBS in 2011, no longer even has the same coach. UMass is 7-25 in conference play during that time, so the justification for staying in the FBS as an independent is hard to find.

According to Mass Live, this isn’t the first time UMass folks have suggested the football program hang ’em up for good, but that idea never seems to get much past talk.

"For those who have followed the ongoing Faculty Senate discussions about the future of FBS football at UMass, none of this should come as much of a surprise."
