Jared Goff & Carson Wentz Are the Lowest Rated QBs to Be Drafted 1st or 2nd in Over a Decade

Jared Goff will be drafted 1st overall by the Los Angeles Rams tonight at the NFL draft; Carson Wentz will be taken 2nd by the Philadelphia Eagles.

Both teams traded up to draft them. That strategy never works. But maybe it will here.

If Rams and Eagles fans are nervous, it’s easy to understand why: Dating back to 2004, every QB that has been taken 1st or 2nd overall was rated higher coming out of college than Goff and Wentz according to ESPN’s Scouts Inc. That includes JaMarcus Russell (colossal bust), who went 1st overall in 2007 and is now begging the league to let him back in.

Here’s a chart via Business Insider that shows the gap between Andrew Luck (highest rated QB coming out of college dating back to 2004) and Goff and Wentz.

Maybe the Rams will incorporate the Bear Raid offense so Goff can thrive, or Wentz will get to “redshirt” in 2016, and the kid who started just 23 games at North Dakota State will prove everyone wrong.
