McQueary Testimony: Greg Schiano Witnessed Jerry Sandusky With a Boy in Shower

Greg Schiano — former Rutgers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach and current Ohio State defensive coordinator — witnessed Jerry Sandusky “doing something to a boy in a shower,” according to testimony that came out in the unsealed Penn State documents released today. Schiano was a Penn State assistant from 1990-1995.

That testimony came from the deposition of Mike McQueary, who witnessed a similar act with Sandusky and a boy in the shower in 2001, and went to Joe Paterno. After McQueary laid out in detail what he witnessed with Sandusky and how he had talked to Paterno, an attorney asked him if he talked about it with any other coaches.

McQueary testified that he had discussed it with Penn State assistant coach Tom Bradley, and Bradley stated to McQueary that he was aware of other incidents, including when another assistant came to Bradley in the early 1990’s. McQueary testified that Bradley, currently the defensive coordinator at UCLA, told him the assistant was Schiano.

Here’s the excerpt from McQueary’s deposition, taken in 2015 as part of an ongoing insurance lawsuit:

A call to Schiano on Tuesday for comment was not returned.

In May, a report came out that six different Penn State assistants over the years had witnessed inappropriate conduct by Jerry Sandusky, including three in the early-to-mid 90’s. NBC News identified those three as coaches “who have gone on to work in the NFL and at Division I colleges.” Jim Caldwell, Detroit Lions head coach and a former Penn State assistant, immediately came out after that report and denied any knowledge. Given that there were only a handful of Penn State assistants that fit those descriptions, and Schiano is the most high profile among them, our site reached out to Schiano in May to see if he had any comment, and he never responded.

In 2011, Schiano was asked if he had any inkling of  Sandusky’s alleged behavior when he was an assistant at Penn State. He responded:

Because of the situation being what it is, I’m not even going to get into it. I’m so far removed. Again, you don’t need people making commentaries on things like this. It’s just a sad thing.

McQueary did not testify as to any knowledge about what happened after Schiano reportedly talked to Bradley, and there is no indication or claim as to whether Schiano had a discussion with Joe Paterno.
