Alex Rodriguez is certainly on his last legs as a baseball player and many have speculated that he would either retire or be released by the New York Yankees at some point this season. Well, the Yankees have called a press conference for 11 a.m. on Sunday that concerns Rodriguez, and no one knows quite what the announcement will be.

All we know so far is that the media session will involve an announcement by or about Rodriguez and that manager Joe Girardi and general manager Brian Cashman will both speak. From the outside looking it, that sure sounds like either some kind of retirement announcement — similar to that of Mark Teixeira earlier in the week — or an impending release.

So far this year, Rodriguez has struggled mightily. He’s hitting just .204, with nine home runs and 29 RBIs in 62 games. Just last year he appeared to have regained some of his form after being suspended for all of 2014. During the 2015 season he hit .250, launched 33 home runs and drove in 86 runs. But this season the 41-year-old has looked completely done in his 22nd big league season.

Rodriguez has spent the last 12 years of his career with the Yankees and helped the team win the 2009 World Series. He is a 14-time All-Star, three-time American League MVP and has 696 career home runs. But admissions that he took performance-enhancing drugs on multiple occasions have destroyed whatever legacy A-Rod hoped to leave. If he does announce his retirement he’ll be doing so as one of the most reviled, mocked players in baseball.
