Serena Williams Loses in Two Sets to Ukraine's Elina Svitolina

Serena Williams lost in two sets to Elina Svitolina of Ukraine in the third round of the Olympics. “Svitolina has simply been the better player,” wrote ESPN’s Kurt Streeter, when Serena was in trouble. “Lively feet, heavy forehand. Serena by comparison looks a bit slow to react.”

This was the moment when it was apparent Serena might not be able to rebound:

Serena has been battling a shoulder injury, but this result was nevertheless a surprise.
