This Promo Package for Goldberg vs Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania XX Was So Good

Goldberg and Brock Lesnar are going to be scrapping it up at Survivor Series next month, and WWE will do its best to mythologize the matchup. Michael Cole already called Goldberg the greatest WCW champion of all-time, which is something that Vince McMahon likely made him say through the headset, and a statement that both men are aware is a shameless lie. (Whether you’re a Ric Flair or a Sting guy, they were both better, and Hollywood Hogan would have a legitimate claim for third.)

What WWE surely won’t be telling us is that the first Goldberg and Lesnar match, at Wrestlemania XX at MSG in 2004, was a massive dud. Both performers were leaving the company, the company failed to keep that a secret, and the crowd just booed the whole match.

Knowing that, I hadn’t recollected that the buildup to the match was actually pretty awesome! If you liked watching wrestling in this era, there are so many gems in the promo package above. Steve Austin giving Goldberg a front row ticket to a title match between Lesnar and Eddie Guerrero. Jim Ross wondering how Lesnar could attack Goldberg: WHAT’S THIS ABOUT?!?! LESNAR’S NOT EVEN IN THE ROYAL RUMBLE MATCH. Vince McMahon teasing the crowd that the match won’t happen because it’s too dangerous and no one can contain it. It’s all incredible.

Let’s hope we get a good story over the next month.
