Verne Lundquist called his penultimate college football game today, providing the words for Alabama’s rout of Florida in the SEC Championship Game. The legendary broadcaster began announcing the sport at the network level in 1974 and was installed as the lead for CBS’ coverage of the conference in 2000. During his time behind the microphone he’s been brilliant — an affable companion on Saturday afternoons and nights.

The network paid tribute to the departing giant with a beautiful tribute video before signing off from Atlanta. Warning: it may induce emotions.

Lundquist and partner Gary Danielson are on the Army-Navy game next Saturday. Hopefully there’s something similar at the end of that broadcast.
