John Elway Fired Offensive Coordinator Mike McCoy, But That Won't Fix Anything

Bulletproof Denver Broncos President John Elway fired the team’s offensive coordinator, Mike McCoy, this morning. The Broncos have lost six in a row, and they’re headed toward another season without a playoff trip.

The only person to blame for Denver’s struggles is Elway himself. But the media won’t do that – the media loves Elway. A telegenic QB who won two Super Bowls at the end of his career and rode off into the sunset. A Hall of Famer who married a cheerleader, made millions from his car dealerships, and then returned to the Broncos front office and helped win them a Super Bowl.

But in reality, Peyton Manning won Denver that Super Bowl. Now we can argue if Manning only came to Denver because of Elway; maybe that’s true. But if Manning doesn’t go to Denver, the Broncos don’t win a Super Bowl, that we can agree on.

And as we’ve previously detailed, Elway has been atrocious drafting QBs in Denver. Elway wanted to pay Brock Osweiler $16 million a year, but got lucky when the Texans offered $18 million.

Denver is still waiting for Paxton Lynch, the QB they traded up for in 2016, to see if he’s franchise QB material. I have a feeling Elway will be in the market for a QB in the 2018 draft.
