Tennessee hired, then apparently backed away from Greg Schiano in the span of a few hours. The school immediately faced serious backlash for Schiano’s connection to the Jerry Sandusky mess at Penn State.
Twitter was quick to react to both the hiring and the apparent breakup and, as always, the reactions were pretty great.
Here are some of the best:
Look, I wouldn’t hire Schiano either… but your leadership had a contract ready and they didn’t think it was a bad idea. That’s kinda the point. The issues there are clearly bigger than the coach. Your leadership is clueless

All of the Rutgers, etc talk misses the point of why the Vols fans don’t want him. THIS is on campus today after the announcement. THIS is their objection pic.twitter.com/SbZHCp1SHG

This is the same fan base that worships Bruce Pearl

This Schiano/Tennessee thing is so weird.
Fans: We hate this because of X.
Traditional media types (yes, I know I am one): Nah, this is totally cool.
John Currie is probably better off listening to his fans than to us. They buy tickets. We don’t.

Imagine being a Tennessee fan, your rival just got the coach you should have hired in Dan Mullen, and your administration has caused an impromptu protest because you're about to hire Greg Schiano.
I don't know if there is a "Peak Vols." It's a never-ending mountain of weird.

Tennessee #Vols on every level – parents of current players, former players, current coaches, former coaches – and coaches from other programs – universally against Schiano. Never seen anything like it.

Media: SEC fans only care about winning.
Us: You CANT hire Schiano!
Media: He's a proven man with solid resume.
Us: He knew of child rape and said nothing.
Media: UT fans just mad he's not Gruden.
Us: HE KNEW OF CHILD RAPE
Media: lol delusional fanbase

I'll say this for Schiano: He united this fanbase like nobody else has since Phil Fulmer today. Incredible movement.

The 30 for 30 on how Twitter stopped Tennessee from hiring Greg Schiano is going to be amazing.

John Currie has a press conference to announce Greg Schiano and the NWO music starts playing.@Lane_Kiffin comes from behind the curtain. Hits Schiano with a chair and spray paints VFL on his back.
Kiffin back at the helm.

Look, I love everybody. But the people citing Urban Meyer as a character witness for Schiano do know Tennessee played Florida when Aaron Hernandez was on the sideline, right?

REPORT: Greg Schiano will not be the Tennessee coach. He finishes his 6 hour Vols career with only 5 losses, a step in the right direction for Tennessee.

Thanks Twitter, that was fun.
