College basketball has a big of a scheduling problem, in that the beginning of college basketball season is obscured by the World Series, college football, and the NFL (not to mention the NBA).

That being the case, each college basketball season has its own beginning, that moment when, for whatever reason, you can just feel that things have begun in earnest.

Gus Johnson and the last 15 seconds of Indiana-Notre Dame is that moment for 2017,

This has some key elements to make it extra college basketball-ish. The Gus Johnson screaming goes without mentioning, but you’re treated to an intense game that was decided by a series of mistakes at the very end.

  1. Up three, Notre Dame fouls a shooter, but …
  2. The shooter misses the game-tying free throw, but …
  3. Notre Dame gave up an offensive rebound, and then …
  4. Failed to get off a shot that even looked athletic.

Fantastic, all around.
