Five Brock Lesnar Fights UFC Needs To Make Happen

Brock Lesnar retained his WWE Universal Championship at Wrestlemania 34 with a win over Roman Reigns. Despite that happening, all signs point to Lesnar returning to the UFC soon. He still has to serve six months of a suspension for a positive PED test, but after that he’ll be eligible to compete

With that in mind, here’s a look at five fighters the UFC could match up with Lesnar when he does return.

Jon Jones

This is the fight everyone wants to see. No, there wouldn’t be any championship stakes involved, but it would be two of the biggest names in mixed martial arts history squaring off.

Jon Jones currently has his fighting license revoked due to two positive PED tests and likely won’t get it back until 2019. But that would give Lesnar plenty of time for a tune-up fight and a lot of training before stepping back in the octagon.

Jones carries a record of 22-1 (1 no contest) but has never truly been defeated. His one loss came back in 2009 when he was disqualified for using an illegal elbow strike against Matt Hamill. He was clearly winning the fight before the DQ.

This fight would pit the big, bad Lesnar against the most purely talented fighter to ever step into the octagon. I’d watch.

Stipe Miocic

In just two years, Stipe Miocic has become arguably the greatest heavyweight champion in UFC history. He’s defended his title belt a record-tying three times and done it in dominant fashion. And he’s running out of legitimate heavyweight competition.

Miocic is scheduled to defend his belt against UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier at UFC 226 in July. If he comes through that bout unscathed, a duel with Lesnar sometime this fall would do major pay-per-view money. Miocic is always up for a brawl, so it could be a real crowd-pleaser.

Could Lesnar get a title fight in his first match back? Of course he could. Does Lesnar deserve a title fight after not actually winning an official fight since July 3, 2010? Absolutely not, but Dana White runs the show at the UFC and he does whatever he wants. If he wants Lesnar vs. Miocic to happen, it will.

Daniel Cormier

Cormier is 39 and has openly said he doesn’t have much time left in mixed martial arts, so he’s willing to take big fights. There would be none bigger than facing Brock Lesnar.

Cormier is getting his chance at UFC heavyweight champ Stipe Miocic in July and if he wins that, a bout with Lesnar would be really fun.

The current UFC light heavyweight champ has a record of 20-1 (one no contest), with that one loss coming against Jon Jones in 2015. The no-contest was a loss against Jones too, but was overturned after the winner tested positive for Turinabol.

The former heavyweight competitor boasts wins over Anthony Johnson (twice), Anderson Silva, Alexander Gustafsson, Dan Henderson, Roy Nelson, Frank Mir, Josh Barnett and Antonio Silva. He’s never been afraid of fighting afraid anyone. Lesnar would be a great matchup.

Cain Velasquez

As shocking as this may seem, Cain Velasquez and Lesnar both last fought on the same night. That was back on July 9, 2016 at UFC 200. Lesnar beat Mark Hunt by unanimous decision (later overturned due to Lesnar’s positive PED test) and Velasquez knocked out Travis Browne in the first round.

The two former champions have since been on radically different paths. Velasquez has dealt with a number of nagging injuries and Lesnar has been in the WWE. But the pair will forever be linked because Velasquez was the one to stop Lesnar’s UFC heavyweight title reign.

Back in October of 2010 at UFC 121, Velasquez knocked Lesnar out in 4:12 of the first round to win the title. He then lost it to Junior dos Santos, before winning it back in a rematch. He defended it twice before Fabricio Werdum submitted him at UFC 188. Werdum then dropped the belt to Miocic, the current champion.

Seeing Velasquez and Lesnar dance again after such a long layoff for both men would be fantastic. Cain is trying desperately to get cleared to fight after being ruled unfit to compete at UFC 207 thanks to bone spurs in his back.

Alistair Overeem

While Velasquez ended Lesnar’s title run, Alistair Overeem nearly ended his career at UFC 141. Overeem swarmed Lesnar and knocked him out in just 2:26 after nailing him with a body kick and punching him out. That fight, on December 30, 2011 looked to be Lesnar’s last in mixed martial arts, as he opted to return to professional wrestling afterwards.

Lesnar probably deserves a chance at a rematch with Overeem, who has some big wins on his resume since taking Brock out. He recently lost to Francis Ngannou at UFC 218 after one of the greatest one-punch knockouts in UFC history.

Overeem is set to face Curtis Blaydes at UFC 225 in June, and a win there could set up a much-anticipated rematch against Lesnar. It would be a fight featuring two of the UFC’s biggest and most athletic competitors going toe-to-toe. And it almost certainly wouldn’t go the distance.
