Both teams had quite a comfortable road to the Final Four. Cruz Azul had the best overall record in the Liga MX Apertura regular season, and made easy work of Querétaro, winning 3-1 on aggregate in the quarterfinals. With the fifth-best regular season campaign, the Rayados were paired with Santos Laguna and also had a comfortable time, winning 3-0 over two legs.

The two now meet with a clear favorite: La Máquina look by far the better side in this matchup, and they have in midfielder Elias Hernández a brilliantly creative midfielder who leads his team in assists and will no doubt be the one Cruz Azul look to for inspiration. Away goals count in the Liga MX Playoffs, so if Hernández can come up with some magic on Wednesday, his team could have a big advantage.

Cruz Azul has an unbeaten streak against Monterrey dating back to 2014. Recently, they’ve dispatched their opponent in the Copa MX Final, 2-0, and in a regular Apertura match, 2-1.  If Monterrey has any hope of breaking this poor run, perhaps it’s in the comfort of their own home before a return leg to the daunting Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
