Los Blancos are already assured of a priority place in the round of 16 alongside fellow group qualifiers AS Roma, who are three points behind Real after losing to Real both home and away. The away goal rule means the Giallorossi would still come second if Real were stunned by CKSA and they beat Viktoria Plzen in the Czech Republic.
Head coach Santiago Solari appears likely to rest some of his higher-profile stars given the low-risk nature of the midweek matchup, with Real chasing a rare piece of revenge over their Russian rivals. CSKA emerged narrow 1-0 victors over Real in October, but the Madrileños have since appointed Solari and put results back on track.
These two teams hold a finely balanced record after three all-time meetings, as Nikola Vlasic’s decider two months ago leaves each side with one win apiece and one draw.
Real thumped the Moscow outfit 4-1 in the latter’s only trip to the Bernabeu, during the 2011-12 Champions League group stage, although Cristiano Ronaldo was on hand to supply two goals on that occasion.
CSKA cannot qualify for the round of 16, even with a win, and their away form of late doesn’t suggest an upset will be on the cards, managing only one win in their last four matches on the road.
Solari’s Real, meanwhile, continue their restoration project and have won their last four matches in a row, though it will be a test to see if Wednesday’s likely experimental lineup will be worthy of the test.
