No one expected much from the Bears coming into the season. There was hope for Mitch Trubisky in his second year as a starting quarterback, Jordan Howard was poised for a strong season at running back, and the defense looked good on paper. Still, the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings were the clear favorites for the NFC North, with the Bears trying to make some noise.

Then, Chicago acquired superstar linebacker Khalil Mack in what will go down as one of the best trades the franchise has ever made, and the Bears defense went from good on paper to dominant on the field. It was that unit, led by Mack, that carried Chicago to a 12-4 record and the division title. Trubisky had his moments, some of them in key games, and Howard was as good as advertised. But this team will go as far as their defense takes them, and if the regular season is any indicator, this Bears team can go very, very far.

The Eagles clearly had a case of the Super Bowl hangover, and combined with a shockingly bad season from Carson Wentz, Philadelphia were out of the playoff picture for most of the season. Then Wentz got injured again, Super Bowl hero Nick Foles took over again, the Eagles won three in a row and snuck into the playoffs. They are now in a familiar spot: the underdogs trying to make a Super Bowl, and you don’t need to look back too far to know they can definitely shock the odds.
