Nine places separate these two teams in La Liga as things stand, with Ernesto Valverde’s Barcelona team sitting five points in front of Atletico Madrid at the summit and Levante lingering at mid-table.
Both teams defeated lower-league opposition in the previous round—Levante beat Lugo 3-1 over two legs, while Barca defeated Cultural Leonesa 5-1 on aggregate—albeit with varying difficulty. But the Blaugrana are sure to step things up a notch now that a top-flight opponent stands between them and the final eight.
Victory in Valencia would see Barcelona extend their run to 10 matches unbeaten and set a new best streak for this season. Hosts Levante has lost two of their last four games and succumbed 5-0 at home to Barcelona when these two teams met at this same location in the league last month.
That being said, it was only in May that Los Granotas edged Barcelona 5-4 to clinch their first win over Barcelona, and manager Paco Lopez—hired not long before that win—will seek another shock result on Thursday.
The round of 16 will also see the video assistant referee introduced for the first time in Copa del Rey history.
