The Ohio State Buckeyes have lost three games in a row and are on their longest streak of defeats under coach Chris Holtmann, and are at risk of suffering a fourth when Maryland visit on Friday.
The Terrapins (15-3) travel to Value City Arena in Columbus having won their last six matches in succession, and they’ll look to beat another fellow Big Ten opponent on the road to March Madness.

Maryland took Wisconsin’s place at No. 19 in the rankings after beating the Badgers 64-60 on Monday, when Anthony Cowan Jr. ran out with almost a third of his team’s points (21). That win took Mark Turgeon’s men to 7-1 in conference games this term, trailing only Michigan State (16-2) and Michigan (17-1) in the Big Ten overall.
Sophomore center Kaleb Wesson has been the standout asset for Ohio State this season, leading the team in points per game (16.2) and rebounds (6.9). However, the Buckeyes have struggled for ideas when he’s been boxed out by opponents.
Holtmann recently hinted at that concern and the struggle for a depth of creativity in the team. He spoke to the press after Saturday’s 72-62 defeat at Iowa, where 10 of his players each received 10 minutes or more on the court:
“We’re all searching a little bit and trying to look for some life and energy from our guys. I’ve been trying to give some guys an opportunity to see how effective they can be. Obviously, it’s a difficult environment for that to happen. We’ve obviously got a lot of work to do, a lot to work on.”
The Terrapins have had no such troubles, with five-star recruit Jalen Smith and sophomore forward Bruno Fernando helping Cowan share the load as some of the other stars in Maryland.
Despite their poor form, the more established Buckeyes are tipped as favorites by the bookmakers, but Maryland looks the more likely to cover the spread and offer underdog value.
