The US Women’s National Team will open its World Cup year with a friendly visit to this summer’s tournament hosts at the Stade Oceane in Le Havre, France, whom they have failed to beat in their last two meetings.

The 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup is still five months away, but Saturday’s clash between the top-ranked team on the planet and their hosts, perched at No. 3, will provide a scale as to where each team stands in their preparations.

France’s all-time record against the U.S. stands at two wins, three draws, and 17 defeats, per USSoccer.com, but both of those wins and two of their draws have come in the last eight matchups.

Head coach Corinne Diacre went through a miserable patch of five games without a win last winter—albeit against largely top-tier opposition—but Les Bleues have won their last seven matches in a row. Not only that, but they’ve scored 27 goals and conceded just once during that streak.

United States boss Jill Ellis can, therefore, be proud to say her side boast form superior to even that, having won their last 10 in succession and conceding once, while scoring 37 of their own in a 28-game unbeaten run.

France will be a fashionable pick to join the U.S as the second team to win a World Cup as hosts. But the 27-player Stars and Stripes squad that traveled to Portugal for a tune-up trip last week has a mix of established heroes and torchbearers that keeps them looking invincible.

Much has changed for Diacre’s squad since France beat the United States in their last home meeting in Lorient (February 2015), but even their evolution may not have caught up with the Americans’ development.
