Girona has already broken new ground by making it to the quarterfinals of the Copa del Rey for the first time in their history, but Real Madrid looks likely to oust the Catalan club on Thursday.

Real suffered a scare when these two teams faced off at the Santiago Bernabeu last Thursday when it was Girona who got on the score sheet first and looked a genuine threat for the upset.
While a late charge saw Real soar to a comfortable 4-2 scoreline, in the end, Girona’s two away strikes could come to have great significance in the event they win by two goals.
Either a 2-0 or 3-1 victory for Thursday’s hosts would be enough to qualify for the Copa del Rey semifinals—their best finish prior to this season was the round of 16, which the club last reached in 1948-49.
It’s unfortunate for Girona that they’ve come upon such a wasteful patch in form and haven’t won any of their last 10 games. Of those, four took place at the Estadi Montilivi and resulted in three draws (Atletico Madrid, Alaves and Getafe) and a 2-0 defeat to Barcelona.
So, while Girona’s recent record may not make for fine reading, it’s worth noting the level of opposition they’ve faced, and Real would be unwise to treat Thursday’s hosts as an easy fixture.
Santiago Solari’s side has won five of their last eight games but lost 1-0 to Leganes in their last Copa del Rey clash away from home.
