The Sixers were undoubtedly the winners of the NBA Trade Deadline, acquiring forward Tobias Harris to add another shooter and playmaker to form arguably the best starting five in the East. Harris has been very impressive in his first two games as a Sixer, and Joel Embiid, in particular, seems to have benefitted from the spacing provided by the former Clipper.
Philadelphia dominated the second-best team in the West, the Denver Nuggets last Friday, and then scored 143 points against LeBron James and the Lakers on Sunday. The Sixers are even more talented right now, and despite being in fourth place in their conference they seem poised for a big run.
Things are not as positive in Boston. Pre-season expectations saw the Celtics cruising through the East on their way to a meeting with the Warriors in the NBA Finals, but some Boston fans are bracing themselves for a first-round exit in the NBA Playoffs. That’s because we’re in February and the Celtics still haven’t figured out how to put all of their talents together. They don’t quite know their roles, they all want a lot of shots, and the weekend’s loss against the Los Angeles Clippers in which they squandered a 28-point lead was a clear indicator that coach Brad Stevens needs to find solutions quickly – or this team will not be able to compete with the likes of Philadelphia, Toronto, and Milwaukee.
Perhaps a big win over the Sixers on the road is exactly what Boston needs to improve morale and focus solely on winning, but with point guard Kyrie Irving still out with a knee injury, their chances of winning in Philadelphia have certainly taken a hit. Despite all the problems, this team is really good. So are the Sixers, by the way. So yes, this should be a great game.
