No. 24 Maryland may be the lowest-ranked college in the Big Ten’s top six teams, but they can draw level with leaders Michigan on 11 conference wins at the Crisler Center on Saturday.

The Terrapins will face No. 6 Michigan twice in their next five games, and the matchup looks evenly balanced after both Big Ten titans have shown wobbling form over the past four weeks.

Maryland coach Mark Turgeon will have been overjoyed to see Penn State hand the Wolverines their third defeat of the season on Tuesday, even though Saturday’s hosts are still yet to lose in Ann Arbor.

Charles Matthews scored a Michigan high of 24 points but couldn’t stop a 75-69 defeat at PSU, as small forward Iggy Brazdeikis was off his best, not for the first time in 2019.

Maryland’s recent record isn’t far better, as they’ve gone 3-3 since January 21. The silver lining for them, unlike Michigan, is that two of those defeats were against ranked foes (Michigan State and Wisconsin), while the other fell against an improving Illinois team at Madison Square Garden.

Almost one year has passed since Michigan and Maryland last met in February 2018, when the former emerged 85-61 victors to count their biggest-ever win facing this opponent. The Wolverines beat the Terrapins in straight games for the first time in 2018 but are still 4-5 in overall meetings.

Michigan coach John Beilein hasn’t lost back-to-back games in two years, but Maryland impressed during Tuesday’s 70-56 beating of No. 12 Purdue. Forward Jalen Smith (16 points) and guard Anthony Cowan Jr. (six assists) remain two key men for Turgeon and will be ones to watch out for in the trip northwest.
