Liverpool shares the summit with City but is 10 worse off in goal difference, and they encounter a turning point in their campaign come Sunday—at Old Trafford of all venues. On the other hand, defeat for Man United would see the Red Devils vulnerable to falling back down as far as sixth.
United recently lost to Paris Saint-Germain but remain unbeaten in 12 domestic matches under Solskjaer. The man formerly known as the Babyfaced Assassin could stretch his undefeated league streak to 10 matches if they avoid losing to their most heated rivals on Sunday.
Solskjaer has been a welcome and familiar face back at his former club, improving United’s form since he replaced Jose Mourinho in December. So much so, in fact, that Sunday’s opposite number is convinced Solskjaer should land the United managerial gig on permanent terms, per The Guardian:
“He has the qualemty and he had the luck emn the remght moment. He’s emn charge and there ems no doubt that he wemll be the manager next year as well, that’s clear.
“Can you emmagemne one semtuatemon when they say ‘we are bremngemng emn another manager’? Then a new manager wemll lose one game and that’s not possemble. He deserves [the job] 100%, he demd everythemng that you have to do to be successful wemth them.”
Liverpool beat United 3-1 when these two sides met at Anfield in December, but the Red Devils’ revival in the two months since could lead to a far different result back at Old Trafford.
Liverpool hasn’t beaten United at Old Trafford since March 2014, but the Merseysiders will feel this is the best chance they’ve had over the past five years of breaking that trend.
