Schalke faces a seemingly impossible task in overcoming a 3-2 deficit at Manchester City on Tuesday, though the prize of a Champions League quarter-final spot could inspire the underdogs. The Citizens scored twice in the closing minutes of their trip to Gelsenkirchen despite being reduced to 10 men, and they’ll look to round off their last-16 clash with a home victory.

Nicolas Otamendi’s sending off turned into a form of catalyst for City in Germany last month when late goals from Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling ensured they take a slim lead into the second leg.
There will again be plenty of attention on Sane, who could face his former club for a second time, although the hosts have a plethora of talent they can call upon to help see through the result.
Man City is bidding to reach the Champions League quarters in back-to-back campaigns for the first time in their history, having been knocked out by runners-up Liverpool in the previous tournament’s last eight.
Manager Pep Guardiola brought humbled his side in the buildup to Tuesday’s clash and called his City side “teenagers” in comparison to some of Europe’s more well-established clubs:
“We could make another step this season, but you need 20, 30 years… we cannot deny, if we arrive in the last stages of this competition, we make another step forward, but I think to compare with other teams, one success doesn’t change it.
“We are teenagers in this competition. That’s how I feel. We push ourselves. Will not be happy if we don’t go through. We want it.”
Schalke manager Domenico Todesco will be without injured duo Dani Caligiuri and Alessandro Schopf, while Omar Mascarell is a doubt for the visitors.
Along with Otamendi, Fernandinho is also suspended for the clash. Guardiola’s grave concerns are with Sergio Aguero, Kevin De Bruyne, Vincent Kompany and John Stones, all of whom are questionable to feature after injuries.
It would take a mighty upset for Schalke to score two away goals at the Etihad, but they’ll look to Manchester United’s comeback against Paris Saint-Germain as inspiration for what could be.
