Adnan Januzaj: Manchester United 18-Year-Old is EPL Star of the Day
By Mike Cardillo
Adnan Januzaj scored twice to help Manchester United overcome a halftime deficit and defeat Sunderland 2-1 Saturday in the Premier League.
Januzaj is an 18-year-old Belgian with Albanian, Serbian and Turkish roots. Unless you’re the most hardcore Premier League fan in the world you probably hadn’t heard of him until this August when he made his debut. Saturday represented his first start. If he keeps up performances like today’s he’ll become one of the hottest properties in Europe since his contract is up at the end of the season as he closed talks with United when Sir Alex Ferguson retired. His international future is also in question, with Belgium the frontrunners.
His second goal, a volley from just inside the box which gave United the lead was particularly eye-catching.
The young Belgian’s goals helped prevent Manchester United from losing three straight games in the Premier League for the first time since, I think, the Cretaceous Period. It eased the pressure on David Moyes, who will look like a genius for starting the 18-year-old.
It’s also another sign the Belgians are about to take over the entire world of soccer.
Meanwhile on the other end, Jozy Altidore must be thinking he’s on an episode of “Arrested Development” as his move to Sunderland appears to be a big mistake. Sunderland have one point after seven games and sit dead last in the table heading into the international break.
