BIG DRAMA SHOW: Gennady Golovkin Scores 20th Straight Knockout, Improves Record to 33-0

With Floyd Mayweather Jr. one fight away from retirement, the sport of boxing (and its fans) needs a perennial superstar to latch on to. A new ‘Pound-for-Pound’ Champion, if you will…

If last night’s fight vs. Willie Monroe Jr. was any indication, we might have found that man in the form of Gennady Golovkin.

In front of a wild crowd of 12,372 at The Forum in Inglewood, CA, Golovkin brutally knocked down Monroe Jr. 45 seconds into the sixth round, the third of the match, to win the WBA Middleweight Title.

There is something particularly special about Golovkin. As Ivan Drago’s trainer would say: “Everything he hits, he destroys”. In addition, Gennady’s charisma and connection with the audience is something we haven’t seen in a long time.

He is beloved because he is not just a boxer, he’s a character.

"“Golovkin will not punch Max Kellerman in the post-fight interview … Willie Monroe is good boy … Max, Max, Max, Max. That was a very good drama show” – Gennady, after the fight to HBO’s Max Kellerman."

Golovkin even explained after the fight that he was “looking to give his fans a present,” alluding to the fact that he allowed Monroe to win a round so the fight “was not five minutes.”

"First of all thank you very much, home. Thank you very much LA. Mucho gracias, everybody. I feels great. My performance special for you. Guys. Thank you for my team, you know. Thank you for my opponent. He is bring very good drama show. You know, this present just for you. Thank you."

Simply put: “The God of War” is annihilating everybody. His professional record is now 33-0, 30 of the 33 decisions decided by KO.

As for his next victim? Floyd Mayweather would be out-of-his mind risking his undefeated record and legacy by giving “The Kazakh KO King” a shot at the proverbial ‘Pound-for-Pound’ crown. Futhermore: via ESPN’s Boxing Insider Johnny Wilds, Mayweather would be listed as a minuscule (-130) favorite vs. Golovkin in a potential match up. That’s the type of talent this Kazakh monster has, and to be booked by Las Vegas oddsmakers as practically a “coin flip” vs. the best boxer on Earth — is arguably the most flattering compliment that Golovkin has ever received.

Regardless if a fight vs. Floyd happens or not, GGG wants the blockbuster. “Will you fight Canelo in the future?”, Max Kellerman asked Gennady during the post-match interview. “No not in the future, RIGHT NOW I’m ready, let’s go!”, Golovkin responded.
