Buzz Williams Leaves Marquette to Be New Basketball Coach at Virginia Tech
By Jason McIntyre
Buzz Williams is leaving Marquette to become the next coach at Virginia Tech, according to Yahoo Sports.
Williams, who coached Marquette for the last six seasons, including a trip to the Elite 8 in 2013, will leave the “new” Big East and make a major leap to the ACC, which is the premier conference in the country. Among the coaches in the ACC: Roy Williams, Coack K, Jim Boeheim, Jamie Dixon, and next year, Rick Pitino.
The rumor for awhile was that Williams would eventually replace Rick Barnes at Texas, but the Longhorns had surprising success this year – including a buzzer-beating win in the NCAA Tournament Thursday night – and the school is retaining Barnes.
Williams will have his work cut out for him, going against VCU’s Shaka Smart and Virginia’s Tony Bennett on the fertile Virginia recruiting grounds.
