Charlie Weis' Recruiting Pitch: "Have You Looked At That Pile of Crap Out There?"

Charlie Weis discussed his recruiting pitch at Big 12 Media Day. As per usual, he was rather blunt. Weis sells recruits on their ability to play immediately, referring to his own players as a “pile of crap.”

"“Everyone wants to play,” Weis said. “There’s no one that wants to not play. I said, ‘have you looked at that pile of crap out there? Have you taken a look at that? So if you don’t think you can play here, where do you think you can play?’ It’s a pretty simple approach. And that’s not a sales pitch. That’s practical. You’ve seen it, right? Unfortunately, so have I.”"

Typical. Not coincidentally, that’s the exact same pitch undoubtedly deployed by coaches recruiting against Charlie Weis. Since, you know, this is college football and the coach is kind of responsible for the output on the field. Kansas State has brought in a lower ranked recruiting class than Kansas four of the past five years. They just won the nation’s second best league, with an even less touted “pile of crap.”

Few doubted Weis faced an uphill battle upon arrival at Kansas. Many doubted Charlie Weis’ suitability to lead it. It is still too early to start tabulating a dollars spent per FBS win ratio for Weis’ five-year deal at Kansas. Jayhawk fans are waitign for the elusive first one.
