If Missouri can’t land Painter, a variety of reports indicate the Tigers will try to pluck Ben Jacobson from Northern Iowa. He led the Panthers to the Sweet 16 last year.

Besides Missouri, there aren’t many other quality jobs open besies NC State and Oklahoma.

The guess here is that if Shaka Smart and VCU lose Saturday evening, he’ll be on the phone early the next morning with officials from NC State. If they don’t get Smart … well, there just aren’t that many viable options with experience and the Wolfpack could end up with someone who doesn’t even have the meek credentials of Brian Gregory. The audacity of the school to think it could get Sean Miller, even though he was an assistant there, is laughable.

Oklahoma seems to be Gregg Marshall’s job to lose. Wichita State plays in the NIT Final Four Tuesday night. If the Shockers lose, he could be the Sooners’ coach by Wednesday.

Although Missouri State isn’t considered a great job, the MVC is a good conference, and one guy thinks the Bears could tab Duke assistant Chris Collins as its new coach. The last Dukie to leave for the Midwest was Quin Snyder, and that didn’t work out too well.
