David Ortiz, surprise surprise, wasn’t happy with a check-swing call during Sunday’s Red Sox-Orioles game and starting jawing with third base umpired Jerry Meals. It led to an ejection and during the argument Ortiz made contact with home plate ump John Tumpane. On Tuesday, Ortiz picked up a one-game suspension for his actions, which he will appeal.

Ortiz’s actions on Sunday prompted some criticism from Orioles Hall of Famer Jim Palmer, who was watching the game from home rather than calling it for MASN. Palmer tweeted that Ortiz was disrespectful and then later elaborated on his thoughts to ESPN’s Gordon Edes:

"“Who needs a home plate umpire when David’s at the plate?” Palmer wrote in his e-mail Monday. “He’s always complaining about close pitches. What I found objectionable was that the Red Sox are playing an important series — game tied, fifth inning — and his actions get him tossed. “This game is about winning. What did he do yesterday to help the Sox win? Was there any redeeming or positive outcome from his actions? Only for the Orioles. “How long would a pitcher last on the mound if he had the same histrionics as Ortiz had yesterday? I’m not his judge and jury. I was tweeting about his conduct yesterday, which, in my opinion, is indefensible.”"

Naturally Ortiz didn’t care for it, calling Palmer’s comments disrespectful. Per NESN Ortiz also mused:

"“All of a sudden now he’s killing me, huh? I guess anybody who wants to get famous or make some noise comes to Papi, right?”"

At this point in his life, I’d doubt Palmer is looking for any additional fame. The guy is in the Hall of Fame and was an underwear model in the 70s.

And if we know anything about Ortiz by this point in his career he’s going to do whatever he wants, regardless of what others think.
