Derek Jeter Could Be Seeking A 6-Year Deal And It Might Get Messy
“There’s always the possibility that things could get messy,” Steinbrenner said. “Our fans are very emotional and that’s what we love about them, but I’ve got to try to do my job on behalf of the partnership and everybody involved in the organization. Hank and I need to keep a level head and realize that we’re running a business here.”
Right. The Yankees payroll was over $200,000,000 again last year. Honest question – will we live to see it dip below that mark again? In our lifetimes at least? Do the Yankees really care that by the time that contract expires Jeter will already be a statue that can just be moved into Monument Park? What’s $120 million over 6 years for The Captain? That can’t be that many obstructed view season tickets.
And are there other teams that would even consider a 6-year deal for a past-his-prime shortstop who wants to play even further after his prime? The Yankees worst offer has to be better than anything any other team would be willing to pay. Where else will Jeter be able to bring in the kind of endorsement money that he does in New York? If Jeter isn’t a Yankee, who would care about him? Well, besides Minka.
Jeter isn’t going anywhere.
