ESPN Headline: Mariners Lick Hole

Last night, the Mariners rallied from an abnormally large deficit to defeat the Toronto Blue Jays. Our own Tim Ryan described the comeback as a “dumbfounding debacle.” At no point in his game recap did he mix metaphors to say that the Mariners stunningly licked a big hole. On the other hand, ESPN’s baseball homepage thought they’d go with, “M’s lick 7-run hole in last 3-innings, stun Jays.” Screen grab after the jump.

Now… you can “lick” an opponent by beating them soundly. That’s common slang. You can “climb” out of a “hole.” Also common. Put them together, well, that just sounds dirty.
