Gonzalo Jara Penalty Kick Hits the Post, Brazil Beats Chile in Round of 16
By Mike Cardillo
Gonzalo Jara’s penalty kick hit the right post, allowing Brazil to escape with an extra time victory over Chile in the Round of 16 of the 2014 World Cup. Brazil’s Julio Cesar (on loan at Toronto FC!) came up with a pair of saves earlier in the penalty kick shootout, however Willian and Hulk both missed attempts setting up Jara to extend the much-derided(*) format to sudden death.
How close was Chile to knocking out the five-time tournament champions? Mauricio Pinilla hit the crossbar in the 120th minute of extra time that would have given Chile the victory.
Instead Brazil, unimpressive yet again at the 2014 World Cup, moves on to face the winner of Uruguay/Colombia.
Neymar and Big Phil Scolari will take it.
Sports, man.
(*) Nothing is more fun than reading or listening to Americans who never watch soccer come up with a better way to decide World Cup games than penalty kicks, right?
