Here are some more ugly scenes from Brazil ahead of the 2014 World Cup. Gremio fans, known for their jarringly unsafe “avalanche” celebration after goals, fought with police and held their ground during the club’s 2-0 win over Fluminese. Add crowd control to the growing list of concerns that includes multiple stadiums behind schedule, inadequate transport infrastructure and an inequitable economic environment that brought hundreds of thousands to the streets during the Confederations Cup to protest.
Surely, awarding Brazil the 2014 World Cup with less than a seven-year run in was due to its objective suitability as a venue, and not the powerful presence of two of the most flagrantly corrupt individuals in a flagrantly corrupt sport.
