Jason Day is Taking Tiger Woods' Advice on Mental Toughness and Running with It
By Michael Shamburger
Jason Day took the advice Tiger Woods gave him and ran with it. Day currently leads the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill by two-strokes over Troy Merritt, Kevin Chappell, and Henrick Stenson. After his third round, Day told the media that Tiger’s advice is helping him.
"“Patience and aggression is what he says and extend the lead by one, two shots every day,” said Day. “If it’s not going your way, suck it up and just get it done somehow and that’s just a typical Tiger Woods comment right there. I was talking to him one time and I said, “Man, it’s hard to crack that Top 50 in the world. He goes, ‘Play better.’ OK.”"
Day has held the lead since the first round, and knows how to hold onto a lead for four rounds, he did just that at the BMW Championship last year. Although Day is playing well now, he felt going into the WGC-Cadillac Championship that he needed to improve his mental toughness, so he asked Woods for advice and it appears paying off.
"Via CBS: “That’s just all the stuff that I’ve just said is typical of what he says but he means it when he’s texting, we’re trading texts and he really wants me to do well. [I think about his advice while I’m playing] a lot, actually. I’ve said patience and aggression so much this week. Kind of getting old and everyone wants to beat my head from saying it. “Sometimes that’s what you need to do to win golf tournaments, especially when you do have the lead and that’s what he’s done around here and won so many times doing with that exact piece of advice that he’s given me.”"
Day is attempting to win his eighth PGA Tour event, which would put him one shy of Jordan Spieth. It would also be a great result to have right before the Masters. If the field thinks Day is on his game, his new mental approach could help give him an edge at Augusta.
