Johnny Manziel Was Out and About in College Station this Weekend
One of the things we always hear about Thursday night games is that they’re hell for players to prepare for, but then they love having that weekend off. Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel headed to his old stomping grounds at Texas A&M this past weekend, where he served as an honorary captain for the Auburn game and appeared to otherwise enjoy himself. In addition to the photos above, Busted Coverage screengrabbed photos of Manziel with various coeds, including one where he appeared to be holding a beer.
I’m far from a person to moralize over anybody enjoying his free time, but this wasn’t the smartest way for him to spend the weekend if he values career longevity. As Jason McIntyre wrote last week, we don’t yet know whether or not Manziel can succeed as an NFL quarterback. While he’s yet to distinguish himself on the field, it’s not totally out of the realm of possibility. However, he’s proven to be wholly incapable of laying low off the field. If he were a bona fide starter, you could live with constant distractions, but is a fringe backup worth the headache?
Given that he went to rehab this past offseason, and that it hasn’t been a month since he avoided charges in a domestic incident with his girlfriend, is it too much to ask of him to not be photographed imbibing in a college town right now? At the very least, can’t he turn down these social media ops until he’s accomplished something as a professional quarterback?
