This is perhaps the hardest Round of 16 matchups to predict because these two teams are so similar and don’t have a big difference in quality between them. But Juventus have had the better statistical season: they’re yet to lose a game in Serie A, and Cristiano Ronaldo has been as good as they expected when the Portuguese superstar was signed.
Ronaldo has scored 20 goals for his team this season, but so far only one of those has come in the Champions League. The knockout rounds are usually when he catches fire, however, and with a great scoring record against his former crosstown rival, Ronaldo will no doubt be confident about improving his numbers and helping his team reach the last eight.
Atlético’s job will be to contain not only Ronaldo but Paulo Dybala and Mario Mandzukic, who alongside Ronaldo form a formidable attacking trio. Diego Simeone loves shutting down great attacks, and he’ll no doubt look forward to stopping Juve over two legs. His team has been rock solid all season and are fighting with Barcelona for the Spanish League title, and in Antoine Griezmann they have a true superstar who can carry his team in both legs. He will have some help up front in the form of Álvaro Morata, signed from Chelsea in January. Morata is a former teammate of Ronaldo and used to play at Juventus, so this game means a lot to the Spaniard.
This promises to be a highly intense defensive battle, but these two teams are talented enough to give us an entertaining, attacking match as well. It’s a fascinating matchup, and one you can’t miss.
