Lionel Messi Scored His 60th Champions League Goal (But He Didn't Call Bank)
By Mike Cardillo
Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo need to star in their one 1-on-1 video game or perhaps a McDonald’s-branded trick-shot video. As soccer fans we can simply sit back and enjoy the superstars’ continuing game of “can you top this?”
Tuesday Ronaldo tallied a hat-trick in Real Madrid’s 6-1 win over Galatasaray in the Champions League. Today it was Messi’s turn, as he opened the scoring with this brilliantly struck freekick off the far post to put Barcelona up 1-0 against Ajax. It gave Messi 60 goals in the competition — 11 behind all-time leader Rual.
Messi has never been noted for his free kick ability, but going around the all and all the way to the far post to score here is impressive. Goals like this will help Messi’s cause if he wants to get paid more than his rival, Ronaldo.
