Michigan State's Inexplicable Late-Game Blunders Caused Tom Izzo to Lose His Mind, Fall Down
By Kyle Koster
Michigan State has been burned twice this year by choosing not to foul up three in late-game situations. So leading Indiana 73-71 with 2.0 seconds left and Travis Trice shooting a free throw, Tom Izzo told his team to foul if it was successful.
Somewhere along the way the plan broke down and guard Denzel Valentine hacked Yogi Ferrell 60 feet from the basket after a Trice miss, allowing the Hoosiers a chance to tie.
Izzo then delivered one of the better looks of disbelief you’ll ever see. If you look closely, you can see his last remaining scrap of sanity flying away.
Ferrell’s second attempt was no good, getting Valentine off the hook.
But Izzo’s trevails were not over.
Up by one and at the line with .7 seconds remaining, Marvin Clark was supposed to miss his free-throw attempt. After a nightmarish season of atrocious free-throw shooting for the Spartans, Clark naturally sank it.
This bit of disappointment caused Izzo to collapse onto the scorer’s table.
The Hoosiers’ buzzer-beating heave came up short, allowing the Spartans to escape with the victory.
Someone should probably tell Izzo whenever he comes to.
