Miguel Cabrera, The Next Great Tiger

At 27 years old, Cabrera seems to be hitting his stride despite being silly good since he came into the league with the Marlins in 2003. This season he has a chance for career highs in homers, RBIs (Bah! Old statistics! Kill them with fire!), slugging and OPS. (Also, other statistics that I’m not going to pretend to understand.) He also has a chance to win the Triple Crown, which hasn’t been done since Affirmed accomplished the feat in 1978.

Personally, I’m happy for Cabrera. He was one of my favorite players when the Marlins decided to trade him away. Since going to Detroit he became a punchline for his weight and had some legal issues after his dog scratched his face the same day he came home loaded and his wife called the police. Earlier this year it came out that Miguel had spent time in alcohol treatment and stopped drinking all together. Now that he’s got his life straightened out, a more svelte and sober Miguel Cabrera has a chance to become one of the best ever.
