Mike Francesa Watching the U.S. Open Unfurl is the Very Definition of Compelling Television
By Mike Cardillo
Mike Francesa, remember, hosts a radio show. Although it’s simulcast inside the Fox Sports universe, the majority of his audience still listens via radio. Somehow, as is usually the case, Mike sitting there watching live sporting unfold in real time with occasional statements and reactions proves to be utterly compelling stuff. Today’s first round of the U.S. Open reminded us of this again.
The gamut of emotions from Francesa as his personal favorite “Phil” (Mickleson) struggled to close out his round is worthy of another Marconi Award, if not consideration from the Academy.
One of my favorite Francesa tropes is when he bemoans getting “letters” when he gives play-by-play of the NCAA tournament or afternoon baseball games. Considering the U.S. Open is airing on Fox Sports 1 this year he should be okay.
