Philadelphia Phillies Put Together a Meltdown Inning for the Ages Sunday vs. the Tigers [Video]

The Phillies lost to the Tigers 12-4 on Sunday in Detroit, as the Tigers capped a series sweep. On the surface, nothing out of the ordinary. Three-game sweeps happen all the time.

If you happened to watch the bottom of the sixth, you likely won’t soon forget it. The Tigers scored eight runs on only two hits thanks to a hapless combination of mistakes by the Phillies. Philadelphia committed three errors – including a dropped fly ball by left fielder Steve Susdorf – and misplayed a pair of bunts. There was also a healthy dose of mental mistakes allowing the Tigers to keep the inning alive.

The loss dropped Philadelphia to 49-56. If GM Ruben Amaro Jr. needed any further nudging his team should be sellers before Wednesday’s trade deadline, he needs to look no further than Sunday’s sixth inning. Jonathan Papelbon certainly agrees.
