Red Sox Lose 5-4 to Cardinals On Bizarre Obstruction Call
By Ty Duffy
A great game ends with a controversy to overshadow it. The Red Sox appeared to have an inning ending double play, tagging out two runners at home with the game tied 4-4 in the Bottom of the 9th. However, third base umpire Jim Joyce ruled that Boston third baseman Will Middlebrooks obstructed the runner. The home plate umpire awarded the run. Game Over. 2-1 lead for the Cardinals.
Red Sox manager John Farrell will face criticism for letting reliever Brandon Workman bat in the Top of the 9th with Mike Napoli still on the bench.
