Rory McIlroy Misses First Cut in a Major Tournament Since 2013
By Michael Shamburger
Rory McIlroy got off to a hot start in his second round at the U.S. Open. McIlroy made four birdies on his first nine that he desperately needed after a disastrous opening round that included eight bogeys and only one birdie. Just one problem, it wasn’t enough and after a terrible four-putt on the par-4 3rd hole, his 12th hole of the day, things continued to go south for the four-time major champion.
With the projected cut at six-over, McIlroy entered the par-4 ninth hole, his 18th of the day, at six-over, but after missing his drive right he found himself in a fairway bunker. His attempt to escape didn’t go well as his ball hit the face of the bunker and he was forced to play his third shot from almost the same spot.
McIlroy was able to get his ball out and into the fairway, but in order to make the cut he needed to hole his wedge to save par and finish at six-over. Unfortunately he did not and then missed his bogey putt and finished with a double-bogey. At eight-over par, McIlroy will miss his first cut in a major tournament since the Open Championship in 2013.
McIlroy isn’t alone on the list of big names who won’t be sticking around and playing again later on Saturday, he joins the likes of Phil Mickelson, Patrick Reed, and Rickie Fowler, along with former U.S. Open champions Justin Rose, Webb Simpson, Geoff Ogilvy, Lucas Glover, Retief Goosen, and Ernie Els.
