There’s one thing that holds society together and it is bloopers. We’d be in a very bad place without them. They make us laugh, think, and revel in the misfortune of others. All are not equal. Here are eight of the best.

Steve Lyons drops his pants

On July 16, 1990, Chicago White Sox’ Steve Lyons dove headfirst into first base to earn an infield single. Covered in dirt and needing to do something about it, he got right to business dropping his pants tidying up. He immediately realized his mistake of treating old Tiger Stadium like Mardi Gras. He never came back from this and no one has ever watched the clip without laughing.

Gus Frerotte headbutts wall

After scrambling in for a touchdown against the Giants in 1997, then-Washington Redskins quarterback Gus Frerotte was fired up. So fired up that he headbutted a wall in elation. It was a terrible idea. He wasn’t the first NFL player — or the last — to hurt himself celebrating, but he’s the one most remember.

Jim Marshall runs the wrong way

On October 25, 1964, standout Vikings defensive lineman Jim Marshall recovered a San Francisco 49ers fumble and broke free for a score. The only problem is that it was a safety for the other team instead of a touchdown. The man ran a long way in the wrong direction and only realized once it was too late. A metaphor for life.

On May 27, 1991, Vancouver Canadians outfielder Rodney McCray made a spectacular running catch on the warning track. His momentum carried him through a plywood fence. He lived a meme, but perhaps without intention. McCray escaped serious injury but not viral fame.

Thanksgiving 2012. Mark Sanchez, unsatisfied with his turkey dinner, went in for an extra course of butt. If one were to design a play for maximum embarassment, it wouldn’t look different. On May 26, 1993, Texas Rangers outfielder Jose Canseco had a beat on a Carlos Martinez flyball to deep right field. Instead of catching it with his glove, the Bash Brother boinked it over the wall for a home run. It would be the least confusing thing Canseco has done over the last 25 years.

Kitten bites groundskeeper

In 1984, a kitten got loose in Seattle’s Kingdome. A poor groundskeeper was tasked with removing the feline intruder and was rewarded with a vicious bite. Friends, it is not polite, but there’s nothing funnier than his reaction to the pain. The most brilliant comedic mind could not improve on the performance.
