The Phoenix Suns Want to Hire Jay Wright

Jay Wright, the calm, cool and collected coach of the Villanova Wildcats, is being coveted by at least one NBA team now that he’s a college basketball championship.

Wright got the Wildcats to the NCAA Tournament in 11 of the past 12 seasons, but his last couple postseasons had been a letdown … until this March. Villanova blew out Iowa, Miami and Oklahoma, and knocked off #1 seeds Kansas and North Carolina to win the title.

But would Wright leave for the Phoenix Suns, one of the worst teams in the NBA? At 20-58 (reminder: Villanova just won 35 games), the Suns are headed toward a Top 5 pick. But the roster is actually quite interesting, especially given Wright’s recent success with two point guards.

Would Wright be able to turn Eric Bledsoe, Brandon Knight and budding star Devin Booker into something in the West? Maybe, but he’d have to hope the GM could unload Tyson Chandler’s terrible contract (3 more years, $39 million) and unearth a couple forwards.

The early guess here, and it’s really, really early: Wright isn’t leaving for the Suns. Villanova, which will be loaded again next year, will win more games and be a Final Four contender. Wright turns 55 in December. Why not wait another year and take the 76ers job?
