The Rough at U.S. Open Host Course Oakmont Looks Unrealistically Difficult
By Michael Shamburger
Oakmont will host the U.S. Open for the ninth time this week. The course is one of the toughest in the country and Phil Mickelson claimed it’s “the hardest golf course we’ve ever played.” Rickie Fowler uploaded a video showing just how fast the greens are and we’ve seen video of a 118-yard putt from the fairway to the green, but now we’re getting our first look at the rough and oh man does it look brutal.
In the video below, Justin Thomas drops a ball into the rough and it disappears.
In this picture by Keegan Bradley, you can barely make out that there’s even a ball in the rough.
Graham McDowell shared a video of AP golf writer Doug Ferguson attempting to hit out of the rough and … whiff. Then McDowell, who was standing just behind Ferguson can’t even find the ball to show that it’s completely buried.
Absolutely brutal.
Here’s a few more pics and videos of the course.
I’ll have a full preview out tomorrow.
