The Portland Timbers beat the Seattle Sounders 3-1 in the U.S. Open Cup. The ending, in extra time, was eventful.
Seattle was down to nine men, after a red card and an injury after all three substitutions were used. In extra time, Seattle’s Michael Arizi got sent off to send Seattle down to eight players. Then Clint Dempsey grabbed the referee’s notebook, threw it, and tore it up, earning himself a red card. He was also restrained from further confronting the ref and clapped in the assistant referee’s face on his way off.
