Carl Pelini has resigned as Florida Atlantic head coach effective immediately. The former Nebraska defensive coordinator was in his second season, with a 4-15 record vs. FBS. The timing is odd, suggesting there is more to this story. Reports indicate this is not due to illness or on field performance.

Calling for a fourth down spike was a notable error, but FAU was not having that bad of a season. He inherited a team that went 1-11 the year before. He went 3-9 in year one. Yes, the Owls were 2-6. But they played six of their first eight games on the road. Two of them were obvious paycheck games at Miami and at Auburn. One loss came against a good East Carolina team. The other three losses were by a combined five points in regulation.

This smells like a Lane Kiffin rebound job.

[UPDATE: According to Brett McMurphy, Carl Pelini and defensive coordinator Pete Rekstis, who will also resign, attended a social event where pot was used.]
