CM Punk Reportedly Quit WWE. So, Uh, Is the News Real or Fake?

Legendary pro wrestling scribe Dave Meltzer reported that WWE superstar CM Punk informed Vince McMahon that he was leaving the organization just before Monday Night Raw earlier this week. According to TMZ, Punk was upset about how they were planning to use him at WrestleMania — in a match against Triple H instead of in the main event — and there are other rumblings of general locker room dissatisfaction.

Obviously, wrestling is weird and it certainly wouldn’t surprise anyone if Vince McMahon and CM Punk conspired to plant this story primarily as a mechanism for Punk to get some much-deserved time off before a miraculous and triumphant return (“WHAT’S HE DOING HERE?!?!”).

Less likely, maybe it’s real. In that case, there will probably be a reconciliation at an indeterminate point down the road. The lowest probability is that the grudge lasts forever.

Prior to his exit, Punk was probably WWE’s 2nd-most popular superstar behind Daniel Bryan, whose storyline of purportedly getting held back by WWE leadership has been bothering the hell out of wrestling fans for months. Mick Foley was irate that Bryan was held out of the Royal Rumble this past Sunday, but, then again, maybe that’s just what they want us to think.
